The remake of Malayalam film Katha Paryumbol has been well scripted into Tamil as Kuselan. But surely this film is well crafted according to the likes of Rajinikanth fans. Thalaivar has been highlighted well to entertain the mass and class audience.

Story

Ashok Kumar which is the character played by Rajinikanth in Kuselan is a well known actor and comes to attend a shooting schedule in a remote village. He happens to reside for a 1 month long shooting schedule and resides in a government guest house.

Balu (Pashupathi) is a village barber. His aged old scissors owned by him and his creaky chair offered to his customers depicts his earnings which are below the poverty line. He is called in the whole village as Barber Balu.

Incidentally Balu happens to be a childhood friend of Ashok kumar. But due to his self respect he denies to go to his actor friend for financial help. Balu has a wife (Meena) and three children. His earnings neither could earn him at least to pay his children’s school fees.
Sridevi (Meena) comes to know about the fact the her husband is a childhood friend to the superstar. Soon the word spreads through out the village and suddenly Balu’s life is changed. Soon he becomes a hero in the village.

Meanwhile, Sridevi pesters her husband to go a meet his actor friend. But Balu denies doing so.

After the shooting schedule is complete Ashok Kumar (Rajinikanth) gets ready to leave the village. But is requested by a lady school principle to attend a school anniversary function.

Rajini aggress to do so as a guest. Meanwhile Meena asks her husband to accompany her to the school, function in order to have  glimpse of her husbands’ friend. Balu aggress and accompanies her. They stand in a penultimate row of the crowd.

Ashok Kumar during the function recognizes his old child hood friend and soon calls him on to his stage. He narrates the sacrifice done by Balu to him and then delivers a message to all the crowds present there.

Then the film ends in a happy note as Ashok Kumar accompanies his friends his small hut dwelling.

Performances

The whole movie has been well crafted to suit Rajinikanth’s character. But the whole first half is wasted in showing him as a big hero.

Nayantara is only restricted to a role of a glam doll. She plays it well with some revealing costumes.

Meena plays the characters of a village barber’s life realistically. Though her costumes are not so apt for her character, she gives her 100% to the film.

Pashupathi is the real hero in this film. His get up has well suited to play the character of a poor barber. The desire to won a modernized saloon one day by the barber is well enacted by Pashupathi.

Vadivelu, Santhaman, Manobala, Livingston play well their roles.

The music is above average which has been composed by GV Prakash.

On the whole this film is a worth watching film as it highlights the values of true friendship.
